Iram has an important place in the history of the Indian independence struggle.
Location--
Iram is only 16 km from Basudebpur in Bhadrak district of Odisha. Located in the distance. The area is surrounded on all sides by the Bay of Bengal and the Kansabal and Gamei rivers.
Contribution to the freedom struggle--
The area was difficult to access by the police and the administration because of its natural privacy, and the place was a haven for freedom fighters. Since 1920, many leaders, including Gopbandhu Das and Harekrishna Mahatab, have come here to convey the message of Mahatma Gandhi to the people and accelerate the freedom struggle. Poet Banchhanidhi Mohanty, who wrote an independent poem, was born here. He was instrumental in the formation of a separate state of Odisha and the end of British rule. His music during the Non-Aligned Movement helped to spread the word of the Congress.
Sacrifice Day ---
In support of Mahatma Gandhi's Quit India Movement, freedom fighters rallied on September 29, 1922 at the Mela Mango Tree in Iram. "She is OK. Suddenly at this time the English police DSP of Basudebpur police station suddenly stopped. Kunjbihari led by Mohanty reached there and fired indiscriminately at them. The incident took place around 6:30 p.m. The crowd could not be reached for comment. Twenty-four freedom fighters were killed and at least 56 were injured in what became known as the Cold War. One of the injured was later pronounced dead at the scene. The total death toll was 29. The British police opened fire on the roof of the residence. That paddy house is still there. Among the dead was a woman named Bewa, who was the only female freedom fighter in Odisha.
